Card sorting

By conducting Card Sorting, you can better understand how your users think and organize information which will enable you to design an intuitive organizational structure for your website's content.

What exactly is card sorting?

Card Sorting is primarily a quantitative research approach that allows us to comprehend user mental models.
These models can then be used to optimize information architecture, workflows, menus, and website navigation.

This technique involves presenting participants with various elements (e.g., website content) and requesting them to organize them according to their logic.

Through the analysis of multiple participants' responses, we can identify common patterns to create an organized and user-friendly website.

The image above shows a dendrogram, one of the most common ways to visualize the results of a Card sorting exercise. In a few words, the dendrogram shows how frequently certain elements are grouped together by participants. Elements that are grouped together frequently should possibly be in the same category in our navigation

When to run a Card sorting

Card sorting is primarily employed in the initial stages of a redesign to:

  • Gather valuable insights that inform the development of our information architecture.
  • Validate concepts for content organization before progressing to the subsequent phases of the design process.

But let us give you a more specific example! Imagine you're redesigning an e-commerce site with hundreds of products ranging from electronics to apparel.Organizing such a variety of items on the website can be overwhelming.

That's when Card Sorting can be extremely useful - it allows you to involve actual users to categorize these products. Through this process, you might find that users expect 'Smart Watches' under both 'Electronics' and 'Fashion Accessories'.

This dual insight would have been difficult to derive without user involvement.
By running a card sorting exercise early on, you ensure the site's structure matches user expectations, potentially boosting user experience and sales conversions.
